Historical Context
The American Revolution, which was fought between the years of 1775-1783, was originally an insurrection by which 13 of the North American colonies won independence and went on to form the United States of America.
The war followed more than a decade of growing estrangement between the British rule of King George and a large and influential segment of its North American colonies. British rulers refused to allow representation of the colonies in their Parliament and this caused the colonies to begin to rebel.
Upon this rebellious nature of the colonies, Great Britain began attempts to assert greater control over colonial affairs after having long adhered to a policy of neglect. Until early in 1778 the conflict was a civil war within the British Empire, but afterward it became an international war as France and Spain in the late 1770's joined the colonies on the side of the Patriots against Britain.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands, which provided both official recognition of the United States and financial support for it, was engaged in its own war against Britain. This caused Britain to go from their usual dominating power, to begin to slip from their reign through these many wars.
From the beginning, sea power was vital in determining the course of the war, England had a dominating navy which rivaled that of Spain lending to British strategy to compensate for the lack of troops sent to America and ultimately enabling the French to help bring about the final British surrender at Yorktown. Thus resulting in American Independence.
