Overview on American Imperialism
In the 1890's, a new phase of imperialism began. This new phase of imperialism was known as New Imperialism. During this time, Europe, the United States and Japan sought to expand their power. Accompanying this were certain ideologies. For the United States this included mainly nationalism, the white man's burden, and the idea of the Manifest Destiny on a much bigger level. American Imperialism, the part of New Imperialism based on the United States, was mainly driven by the United States' desire to expand its power and to show other countries, mainly European, that it was not to be messed with. Additionally, the Unites States needed ports where its ships could stop to refuel. In order to gain more support for this, the U.S. justified this with the idea of the white man's burden. This was the idea that because the United States was so amazing and powerful (nationalistic feelings), that it had the obligation to help other lowly countries by colonizing them. Another justification for American Imperialism was to restore masculinity. Recent events industrialization had begun to challenge the ideal images of femininity and masculinity. Many American men thought that by joining in to aid American Imperialism they could cement their masculinity.
